Hearing postponed for Huron County corrections officer

HARRISON – A hearing for a 22-year-old Huron County corrections officer was postponed after a court hearing in 80th District Court Wednesday.
Troy Helewski, Ubly, did not travel to Harrison Wednesday for the pretrial hearing. After a phone consultation in chambers with the involved parties, court officials said the matter will be rescheduled for another pretrial at a future date. No date for that hearing has been set.
Helewski is charged with aggravated assault for an incident that is alleged to have happened July 3 while he was vacationing in Lincoln Township.
Court officials said that aggravated assault is a high court misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to one year of imprisonment and fine of not more than $1,000 or both.
Clare County Sheriff’s officials who were in court Wednesday said details of the case are not being released until it is resolved through the court system. Helewski is the only person charged in connection with the alleged incident.
Clare County Sheriff John Wilson previously has said Helewski is alleged to have assaulted a 15-year-old victim, who had prior head injuries from a tree hitting him in the head.
The Huron Tribune previously reported that Helewski immediately notified his supervisors at the Huron County Sheriff’s Office upon learning that he was being charged in connection with the incident. He also immediately turned himself in to the Clare County Sheriff’s Office when the warrant was issued.
The Huron County Sheriff’s Office then contacted Clare County for information in connection with the incident. Based on that information, the Tribune reported that a determination was made that Helewski would not be suspended from his duties as a corrections officer.
Helewski has been a full-time Huron County Sheriff’s Office employee since May 26, 2007 and does not have any disciplinary issues noted in his personnel file.
The Clare County Prosecutor’s Office also cannot comment on the case at this time.

It is too bad that Sheriff Wilson is wasting tax payers money. He should have conducted the arrest properly. The nine year old with the head injury is not an invalid and should be held accountable for his own actions. Obviously he was part of the problem. If Sherrif Wilson is a friend of the family isn’t that a conflict of interest! I think it is terrible that the wrong person was arrested for a crime he did not commit. Maybe the county sheriff department should get the correct story rathan than try to ruin a Huron County employees reputation and the distress that this has put on him and his family for being accused for something he did not do! I hope this all comes back to haunt Clare County and the nine year old’s family!

Clare county has done A really rotten job of investating on this case …they should stick to making dounuts…

It was the Prosecutor that issued the warrant, Helewski was not arrested at the scene.

Also, if it was a bad investigation shouldn’t of the Prosecutor caught the mistakes. I would also bet that the actual Sheriff wasn’t the investigator and probable didn’t even know that the arrested person was a corrections officer elsewhere. It’s funny that someone is arrested we say the police did something wrong, when someone isn’t arrested we say that they let some one off.

I am shocked…Corruption in the Sheriff Department? Corruption with County elected officals?

Al….
It doesnt matter if the sheriff did the actual investigation. He is RESPONSIBLE for his detectives. If they dont do their job it falls back on his ability to lead his department. Remember he got rid of one detective that didnt support him in the elections so the current one must be his choice. So it all falls back on his decisions!

Clare county did a horrible job on this case. I think the sheriff needs to read the police reports before trying to answer any questions about the case. You cant tell me the Sheriff didnt know he was a C.O. in another county. To bad the police report said it 4 times…

come on let’s here what a crapy job the county did. to ruin a young man reputation.
your sheriff lied to the huron daily tribune and said he did know that troy work as a correction officer but yet it was in the police report. your sheriff also said the victim was a good kid . since when do good kids go around flipping people off and swearing at them. Please don’t use the excuse of the head injury, i know lots of people with head injury and they dont act that way.(maybe bad parenting)but in clare county it must be ok do to so and be a good person cant wait to go back there a flipp the sherrif off.
would like to know who really read the police report before signing the warrent because if anyone had the warrent for Mr. Helewski would NOT have went out. yes i’m a land owner there and pay my taxes there.

The CORRUPTION is showing in the latest news. I was watching the 9and10 news report and saw Det. Sgt. Mike Coon. Now correct me if I am wrong but about a year ago, if that, I read in this paper that he was demoted from that Sgt position because of some Sexual things that he did while working.
So we taught him a lesson by giving him back his old job that he lost for BREAKING the rules and law? Yeah this sheriff is changing things….Changing things back to the days of Haskin!

So when are you guys going to write that the case was dropped…

Our sheriff couldnt have gotten this wrong. He would have read the police report…all of the training he had prior to being sheriff and the education he received before taking office..
WAIT…he only has a highschool diploma and went to Machine Gun school. Guess he is lacking a bit.
Maybe the report was too much reading for him

Yeah he received his bond money back with no warning from Clare…

Jim,
It was not Coon that got demoted, it was a Clare City Police officer Lt.
Jim | Dec 22, 2009 | Reply
Wrong Lynn……i know the Lt in Clare did. But Coon was a Sgt and worked the as a normal deputy. He lost his Sgt job for sexual misconduct. Now he is back to Sgt in less than a year. Its fact. Look it up in old papers or ask at the County Building. Who gets promoted less than a year after it could have costed the county a large amount of money.
If this doesnt show a “good old boys” network….

clare county lost my respect fore there one side story along with there one sided investagation on a huron county correction offficer. When the corrections officer told the officer that he was an officer for huron county several times when questioned. So i know it was in the police report John Wilson, If too much to read have someone read it for better understanding!
